77 Instagram Captions for Bookstore Businesses that aren’t Boring
Your captions aren’t about the books. Everybody has the books.
That’s the strange thing about selling books. The stock isn’t yours. The same jacket is sitting on a table in 400 other shops this week. How can you stand out from the rest?
What nobody else can post is why you are stocking that particular book, and why should someone buy it from you.
Below are 77 captions for your Instagram to help move your stock.
(Take them. Swap in a title.)
How to Write a Bookstore Caption
A frontlist launch and a backlist rediscovery are opposite posts. One competes with the publisher, the author, and 400 shops all posting the same jacket on the same this Tuesday. The other has no competition whatsoever, because nobody else remembered the book existed. Guess which one sells more copies for a shop your size.
You should be doing this:
The hand-sell test. Write it exactly as you’d say it to somebody standing at the counter. Not “obsessed with this one” but “if you liked the last one, this is the same feeling with a better ending, and don’t start it on a work night.” Hand-selling is the one thing you do that an algorithm does badly, and a caption is a hand-sell with the customer missing. Name who it’s for. But more importantly, name who it isn’t for, which matters more.
The backlist rule. Everybody posts the new release on publication day. Set yourself a rule: for every frontlist post, do one about a book that came out 8 weeks ago or 40 years ago. Backlist is where your margin lives, where the algorithm has no competition to rank you against, and where the recommendation actually sounds like a person rather than a press release.
One more suggestion, and it will annoy you. Your best-performing post this year will not be a book. It’ll be the cat, the ladder, the window in the rain, or somebody’s dog asleep in the poetry section. Don’t fight that and don’t stop posting them. Just make sure every single one carries a recommendation in the last line, so the reach turns into something. A cat photo with a book under it is still a bookshop post.
