77 Cozy Bookstore Name Ideas That Fit on a Tote Bag
Nobody walks into an independent bookstore because it’s the fastest way to get a book. It’s the slowest way. That’s the whole point.
They come for the hour they get to spend inside. Your name is the first promise of what that hour feels like.
Here are 77, sorted by the kind of shop you’re opening.
(Take the one you’d want stitched onto an apron.)
How to Choose a Bookstore Name
Three tests. Run your shortlist through all of them.
The tote bag test. Bookshops make real money on merch, and your name gets printed four inches wide on canvas and embroidered on staff aprons. Long names shrink to mush at that size. And a pun you have to explain looks a lot worse in thread than it sounds out loud.
The recommendation test. Somebody is telling a friend about your shop while walking past it. They get one go, out loud, over traffic. If the friend has to ask how it’s spelled, you’ve lost the search.
The growth test. The corner by the window becomes a café. The back room becomes an events space. Then somebody offers you a second unit two towns over. Don’t name yourself after one room or one street.
Kettle on. This’ll take a minute.
If you plan on having a website or blog, first check your name is available.

Your name is the first thing a browser judges, usually from the pavement. Your slogan is the promise you attach to it. Your captions are where you prove both, one shelfie at a time. Pick the name first. The other two get easier.
