Everything You Need To Know About Journey by Mediavine (in 2026)

Ads on your blog aren’t a reward for getting big. They’re what pays you while you’re still small.
It’s Tuesday, gone 10 o’clock. The laptop is balanced on a cushion and you’re refreshing your Google Analytics like it owes you money. 1,247 sessions this month.
Not nothing.
Not enough either, according to every blogging post you’ve ever read, all of which told you that you’d need 50,000 sessions before an ad network would even open your email.
Those posts are soooo out of date. In January 2026 Mediavine put new bloggers first, and now you only need 1,000 monthly sessions to join!
Below I’ll walk you through how to get ads running on your blog with Journey by Mediavine: what you need, what to install, and how much you can expect to earn.
What is Journey by Mediavine?
Mediavine is the flagship platform. It requires a minimum of 50,000 sessions per month (in the previous 30 days) to be accepted for ad placement.
Journey is the baby ad management solution for growing websites. It’s your first stepping stone to the flagship program. You only need 1000 sessions per month (in the last 30 days) to be accepted. It’s self-service. No account manager, no interview, nobody deciding whether your photography is good enough.
And you don’t get stuck there. Once your site has earned $5,000 in ad revenue over 12 months, you move up to the main network automatically, at a higher revenue share.

What you need before you apply
4 things to check tonight.
- Check you have 1000 sessions in the last 30 days. Sessions, not pageviews, and Google Analytics will tell you the difference in about 6 seconds.
- Install the Grow by Mediavine plugin on your site and let it run for a minimum of 30 days.
- 4 months of domain history. Their ad partners won’t bid on a site younger than that, no matter how good it is.
- Original content that isn’t breaking anybody’s policies.
GA4 isn’t required to be considered, which surprises people. Connect it anyway, because you want to know which of your posts is carrying your entire site.
Now the bit that catches everyone out: that 30 day Grow window runs on its own clock.
Because if you’re sat at 600 sessions today and you wait until you cross 1,000 to install Grow, you’ve just added another month to your wait. Install it now. It’s free, it does bookmarking and content recommendations while it waits, and it’s gathering the traffic data they’ll assess you on.
How to apply, in order
Install Grow. It’s a free plugin. If you’re on WordPress this takes 4 minutes, most of which is you being suspicious that it was that easy.
Leave it alone for 30 days. Keep publishing. Keep pinning. The plugin is doing the measuring.
Apply from inside your Grow account. You don’t fill in a fresh form somewhere else. You log in and the application is sitting there.
Set your ad density when you’re approved. There’s a slider with 4 settings, running from Low up to High, and the default sits at Optimal. Leave it at Optimal for your first 3 months, then experiment when you can see what your bounce rate is doing.
Set up payment. They pay through Tipalti, and some payment methods carry fees, so read the fee list properly before you pick one.
What you’ll actually earn
Journey publishers get a 70% share of the ad revenue their site generates. That share climbs as you grow, all the way to 90% at the top of the main network.
Payment is Net 65. That means the money you earn in January is paid to you 65 days after January finishes, which lands you on the 5th of April if you’re starting in the new year.
There’s a $100 minimum payout. Under $100 and it rolls into next month until you clear it.
Roughly, at 1,000 sessions a month, you’re looking at roughly $10 to $30. That’s not even mini supermarket shop.
But RPMs on Journey run well above what a beginner network pays, and the number moves with your traffic, not with your effort. Double your sessions and you roughly double it. Do that 4 times and you’re at the $5,000 door.
And keep some perspective about where your income is coming from. Ads pay you for a reader who arrives, scrolls and leaves. A digital product pays you 40 times more for the same reader, and you own the customer afterwards.
Do both.
Should you apply at 1,000, or wait?
I’d apply the week you cross it.
Not because $18 changes your life. Because the 4 month domain clock and the 30 day Grow clock both run whether you’re paying attention or not, and there’s no version of this where waiting gets you paid sooner.
Also, and this is the real reason: watching a dashboard tick up in dollars while you sleep does something to how seriously you take your own blog. Ask anyone who’s had it.
