Which of the 4 Personality Types Are You? Type A vs Type B vs Type C vs Type D

Updated On17 August 2026

There is a reason your friend can go live on TikTok five nights a week without blinking, and the thought of it makes you want to lie face down on the floor. It isn’t discipline. It’s temperament, and it decides more about which online business will actually work for you than any “top 10 side hustles” list ever will.

The 4 personality types (A, B, C, and D) make up one of the oldest personality frameworks we have. The origins trace back more than 2,000 years to Hippocrates in ancient Greece, who sorted people into four temperaments named after bodily fluids: choleric, sanguine, melancholic, and phlegmatic. Slightly gross, weirdly durable. That humoral theory was medically wrong but behaviourally sticky, and it kept resurfacing under new names for two millennia. Plato had the guardian, artisan, scientist, and philosopher. Jung had the sensor, intuitor, thinker, and feeler. Eventually it turned up again as the four quadrants of DISC.

The letters came much later. In the 1950s, two American cardiologists, Meyer Friedman and Ray Rosenman, coined “Type A” and “Type B” while studying heart disease risk. The story goes that an upholsterer tipped them off, pointing out that the chairs in their waiting room were only worn out on the front edges, because their patients couldn’t sit back. Type C and Type D were added later to round out the model, and today the Hire Success® system labels the four types Director (A), Socializer (B), Thinker (C), and Supporter (D).

One thing worth clearing up, because half the internet gets it wrong: there are two different “Type D” personalities floating around. The one in this framework is the Supporter, who is steady, loyal, and allergic to chaos. The other is the “distressed” personality identified by Belgian psychologist Johan Denollet in the 1990s, which describes negative emotion paired with social inhibition. They share a letter and nothing else. This post is about the first one.

The last thing to know before you scroll: nobody is one pure type. Everyone is a blend of all four with one dominant type that surfaces most. When two types tie in strength, that’s sometimes called a Type X. So read all four, because you’ll probably recognise yourself strongly in one and halfway in another.

Here’s what each of the 4 personality types looks like, and the online business each one is quietly built for.

Type A: The Director

1. You Are Competitive – Type A people want to win, and they want other people to know they won. They’ll volunteer for the hard assignment, but usually the hard assignment they’re confident they can nail, because losing publicly is worse than not competing. Recognition matters. Being the best in the room matters.

2. You Are Ambitious – Second place isn’t a result, it’s a rough draft. Type A personalities are never satisfied with their current level, income, or skill set. “Taking it easy” reads as wasted time. If a project isn’t challenging them, they lose interest fast and go looking for the next altitude.

3. You Are Impatient With Your Time – Your calendar is full and you like it that way. Type A people are clock-watchers, always half-thinking about the next thing on the list. The downside is real. Relationships can get treated as waypoints, and slowing down to hear about someone’s day can feel like friction.

4. You Work Best With Total Freedom – Type A personalities hate restraints, restrictions, and being micromanaged. They’d rather set their own schedule and be judged on results. This is the single biggest reason so many of them end up self-employed. They’re not chasing entrepreneurship for the lifestyle aesthetic, they’re chasing it for the autonomy.

5. You Are Comfortable With Risk – Where other types see a cliff, a Type A sees a favourable risk-reward ratio. They’re decisive, they’re happy to move before all the information is in, and they recover from a flop faster than most people recover from being mildly embarrassed.

6. You Delegate Rather Than Perfect – Type A personalities are famously not detail-people. They see the endgame and want the pieces moved, not polished. Handing work off doesn’t feel like losing control to them. It feels like speed.

7. You Get Bored, Fast – Routine is the Type A kryptonite. A business that turns into the same five tasks on repeat will be abandoned, no matter how well it’s paying.

Best Online Businesses for Type A Personalities

  • Digital products and courses at scale – Build once, sell repeatedly, grow the number without growing the hours. The leverage is the appeal.
  • E-commerce or a product-based brand – Clear metrics, competitive market, room to expand a line. Type A thrives when there’s a scoreboard.
  • Agency or done-for-you services with a team – You sell and direct while other people execute the detail work you’d resent doing.
  • High-ticket coaching or consulting – Fewer clients, bigger outcomes, direct authority. No fiddly volume work.
  • Affiliate or niche site portfolios – Traffic and revenue graphs are basically a game with a leaderboard.

Avoid: anything that requires slow, identical, repetitive fulfilment forever. Handmade one-offs, high-volume low-ticket customer service, or any model where your income is capped by your hours.

Type B: The Socializer

1. You Are Easy-Going and Warm – Type B people are the ones nobody finds intimidating. Relaxed, friendly, quick to laugh, quick to get along. They’re not carrying yesterday’s stress into today, and they’d rather everyone in the room felt comfortable than have the room run efficiently.

2. You Are Persuasive Without Trying – This is the type that can sell a thing simply by being visibly delighted by it. Enthusiasm is the sales mechanism. People buy from Type B personalities because they like them, not because they were walked through a funnel.

3. You Are an Idea Person – Type B minds generate constantly. New offer, new angle, new brand, new direction, all before lunch. Creativity comes easily. The finishing is where it gets complicated.

4. You Are Motivated by Recognition – Being seen, appreciated, and publicly acknowledged genuinely fuels this type. Comments, shares, testimonials, being the person people tag. That’s not vanity, it’s the actual fuel tank. Their deepest fear runs the other way: being humiliated in public, or appearing unsuccessful.

5. You Have a Short Attention Span – Type B personalities start more than they finish. The excitement peaks at the idea stage and drains somewhere around the admin. Detail work like spreadsheets, tax categories, and backend setup is where projects go quiet.

6. You Procrastinate – Deadlines that are far away don’t feel real. Type Bs work brilliantly under a live crunch and unpredictably outside one.

7. You Are Drained by Isolation – Put a Type B alone in a room with a laptop and no human contact for three months and the business dies. They need interaction to stay switched on.

Best Online Businesses for Type B Personalities

  • Creator, influencer, or UGC work – Being on camera isn’t a cost for this type, it’s the reward.
  • Community-based businesses – Paid memberships, group programmes, Discord or Facebook communities, cohort courses. Recurring revenue built on being liked.
  • Affiliate marketing through personality – Honest enthusiasm about products you actually use converts hard when it comes from a Type B.
  • Live selling, workshops, and events – Anything with a live audience and immediate reaction.
  • Social media management or brand partnerships – Client-facing, conversational, always something new.

Avoid: solo, silent, detail-heavy models. Bookkeeping services, technical VA work, or anything where success depends on doing an identical unglamorous task alone for eighteen months before anyone notices.

Type C: The Thinker

1. You Are an Introvert – Type C people choose solitude and mean it. They’re not shy so much as selectively social, with a small circle they’re genuinely open with and a hard limit on group settings before they need to go home and be quiet.

2. You Are a Perfectionist – Nothing escapes the Type C’s attention. They will not ship something that isn’t right, and they usually only trust themselves to determine what “right” is. Accuracy is a value, not a preference. The trade-off is speed.

3. You Are Analytical and Evidence-Led – Type C personalities make decisions from research and facts, not vibes. If someone tries to sell them with emotion, they get suspicious and start looking for what’s being hidden. When they take a position, they’ve already built the case for it.

4. You Are Skeptical by Default – This type sees the failure mode first. Ninety-nine things went right and they’ll flag the one that didn’t, which is genuinely useful and genuinely exhausting for the people around them.

5. You Dislike Change – Routine and structure are how Type C people stay functional. Constant pivoting, algorithm chaos, and reinventing the offer every quarter is their least favourite way to live.

6. You Are Creative, yet Structured – Type Cs are often quietly, seriously creative. Writers, designers, developers, artists, makers. The creativity comes with craft and patience attached, not with spontaneity.

7. You Work Best Alone – Not anti-social, just genuinely more productive without input. Type C personalities are motivated by independence, control over their own process, and interesting problems.

Best Online Businesses for Type C Personalities

  • Writing-based businesses – Blogging, SEO content, copywriting, newsletters, ghostwriting, self-publishing. Deep work, no camera, quality compounds.
  • Design, illustration, or a digital template shop – Etsy printables, Canva templates, Notion systems, brand kits. The detail obsession becomes the product.
  • Technical freelancing – Web development, data analysis, automation, technical SEO. Paid well precisely because most people can’t be bothered with the detail.
  • Niche authority sites – Research-heavy content in a subject nobody else has covered properly is a Type C superpower.
  • Editing, proofreading, and bookkeeping services – Accuracy as the entire value proposition.

Avoid: businesses that live or die on constant live visibility, aggressive daily posting, or high-volume client contact. Also avoid perfectionism as a business plan, because the Type C failure mode is a beautiful, unlaunched website in year two.

Type D: The Supporter

1. You Move at a Steady, Safe Pace – Type D personalities don’t sprint. They pick a sustainable pace and hold it long after everyone else has quit, which over a two-year timeline usually wins. They think Type A people are faintly insane for taking so many risks.

2. You Seek Security and Longevity – Stability is the priority: predictable income, low risk, no nasty surprises. A slow-building business with reliable repeat customers appeals far more than a viral spike.

3. You Are Genuinely Caring – This type is sincere, patient, and an excellent listener. People trust them quickly and stay loyal for years. In business, this converts into something most brands spend fortunes trying to fake.

4. You Are Consistent and Dependable – Type D people finish things. They’re accurate, thorough, and good at routine tasks that would make a Type A quietly combust. If they said it’ll be ready Thursday, it’s ready Wednesday night.

5. You Avoid Confrontation – Conflict, pushy people, and aggressive behaviour are actively distressing. The risk here is real. Type D personalities undercharge, over-deliver, and go along with things they don’t agree with rather than push back.

6. You Are Resistant to Change – Frequent pivots, disruption to routine, and unpredictability drain this type. They need to build on foundations, not sand.

7. You Thrive With Support Around You – Type D personalities like being part of something. Total isolation isn’t the goal. A small, warm, cooperative circle is.

Best Online Businesses for Type D Personalities

  • Service businesses with retainer clients – Virtual assistant, online business manager, podcast editing, inbox management. Recurring, relationship-based, secure.
  • Subscription boxes or repeat-purchase products – Predictable revenue and a routine you can settle into.
  • Etsy or handmade shops with a signature product line – Consistency and care are the entire brand.
  • Online tutoring, teaching, or wellness coaching – One-to-one, nurturing, deeply repeat-based.
  • Customer support, community moderation, or care-based freelancing – Skills that are undervalued everywhere and desperately needed by growing brands.

Avoid: anything requiring aggressive cold outreach, constant reinvention, or high-stakes financial risk. And build in a firm pricing policy early, because negotiating on the spot is the one thing this type will lose at every time.

Conclusion

The reason most side hustles fail isn’t that the model was bad. It’s that the model was bad for that person. A Type C forcing themselves onto camera daily. A Type B trying to survive eighteen months of silent SEO. A Type A stuck hand-packing orders. A Type D white-knuckling through cold DMs.

You’re a mix of all four types, so take the type you recognised most and treat the others as your known blind spots. Then choose the business that runs on your natural setting rather than the one that requires you to become a different person by Monday.

Because the business you’ll actually still be doing in two years is the one that doesn’t fight who you are as a person.
